Abstract:
Objective:

Iron chalation treatment is required to treat the severe transfusion-dependent anaemia known as thalassemia major.remove the excess of iron. By analysing the blood ferritin and liver enzymes, the current study aimed to determine the iron overload hepatic response to inulin of chicory supplementation

Methods:

50 of the 70 beta thalassemia patients were chosen to receive chelating treatment with chicory inulin. The first dose was 1gr administered twice daily. Twenty individuals were disqualified due to coronary heart failure and Hepatitis B and C.

Results:

47 out of 50 patients tolerated chicory, with the majority responding dramatically. The median level of serum ferritin dropped from 3563.09 ng/ml to 1728.54 ng/ml. The average serum AST level dropped from 25.44 to 22.25 u/lit. The average serum ALT level dropped from 30.861 to 25.085 units/liter. However, there was no significant difference in AST (PV=0.379) or Alt (0.367) following chicory administration. Instead, serum ferritin level considerably dropped after treatment (PV 0.00).

Conclusion:

The current findings imply that chicory can lower liver enzymes and an excess of iron. During intervention, significant variations in serum ferritin were discovered, but not in LFT enzymes.
